Is the T inefficient? Sure. But life isn't fair and when you play with matches, you're gonna get burned. I.e., don't confuse protesting against the system with whining like a spoiled child. Demolish stops (how would that fix a problem with fares)? Don't open all the doors (wouldn't you be just as pissed that the T's moving slow)? Increase the number of trains (that means your fare's gonna go up)? I hear a lot of whining and very little proposed action. You evaded a fare and they caught you. I get pissed when I get pulled over for speeding, but I know I deserve it. Aviv,

If you can't afford to pay it on the spot then they will have a transit cop waiting for you at the next station to arrest you. Their rail system is completely honor based meaning that for the most part you're only occasionally asked to produce a rail pass or fare card - not each time you get on or as a means of gaining access through a turnstyle - they don't have turnstyles. Do people take advantage of this and evade the fares? Yes I am sure they do but the risk is that much greater as the fines are much more substantial, particularly to those most likely to evade. Of course the Swiss rail system is amazing in it's efficient and consistent performance. You can set your watch to their trains as they are always on time. The MBTA could learn a lot by studying the Swiss Rail and how they operate.
