It is that time of year again, when any COM student with friends in other colleges can see one of the glowing benefits to the ‘College of Optional Math’ (COM). As Sargent doctor wannabes and CAS students schlep around books to study for final exams, you will find that COM students are usually carrying little more than a smile, or the occasional tripod. I can only speak for journalism, because that is all I know, but exam week justifies to me all the nonsense projects and video packages that I produce all semester.

Having eaten my weight in food on Thanksgiving a couple of weeks ago, I thought the time was right to provide a guide to the multiple dining options available on campus.
I’ll get right into it with the dining halls. As a senior and someone who ate dining hall food at another college before transferring to BU, I feel supremely qualified to tell you that BU’s food is top-notch. College Prowler gives it an A+. Here’s a Boston Globe story that says BU is “at the forefront of a revolution in campus food across the country.”

There is only one thing that I’m excited for this holiday season, and it’s the DVD release of last summer’s smash hit, The Dark Knight. I’m also the type of dork that Googled “The Dark Knight” and “Batman 2″ since July of 2007. However, the sequel to 2005’s Batman Begins became a bigger sensation than anyone could have imagined. A big part of that was the tragic death of one of the film’s stars, Heath Ledger, and the buzz around his performance – a work of art. Another tool of TDK’s success is the often overlooked fact that the film’s director, Christopher Nolan, and screenwriter – Chris’ brother Jonathan, are very, very good. Oscar-nominated good. Three of their five films are on IMDB’s top 100 films of all time.

Last Saturday marked the end of an era at the College of Communication. Or more accurately, on top of the College of Communication. The radio tower atop the COM building was removed in one of the first major aesthetic changes made by new Dean Tom Fiedler.

Next semester I’ve set aside time in my academic schedule for an internship, the only problem being that I don’t have one yet. Ideally, I’ll have a job lined up when I graduate. I don’t want an internship somewhere after I’ve graduated. After five years of school I’m ready for the real deal — a j-o-b. A job. So the idea for now is to get an internship for the spring semester. I want my foot in the door somewhere so when the spring semester ends I’ll not only have the experience, contacts, and training, but also the chance at a full-time position.

The hot topic of debate around COM recently has centered on a one-credit freshman course that doesn’t count toward graduation.
COM 102, a sequel to the mandatory COM 101, is a required class for all first-semester freshmen. The class meets every Tuesday from 4 to 5 p.m. Every week, guest speakers from various departments of BU, from the Community Service Center to Student Health Services, talk to students about what resources are available to them.
