The annual “Taste of Elegance” was held Monday evening at Boston University, featuring the creativity and the versatility of some of Boston’s top chefs from restaurants such as La Morra, Tremont 647, Rialto, Pigalle, The Fireplace, Z-Square, and Top of the Hub. Chefs showcased their originality with their best pork dish for diners to sample with the chef. The best pork dish would give the chef a chance to escape this frozen Hell and compete in a national competition in Florida. However, not everyone was thrilled to see an event showcasing pork dishes.

There’s something to be said for The New Yorker’s minimalist design. The cover (for subscribers) offers no teasers, and the pages within hold little more than blocks of text occasionally interrupted by illustrations. There are no flashy design elements, no large-print quotes to keep you reading, there is little more than text.

I, like most well-to-do college students, spend most of my semester going out too frequently, starting projects too late, and barely making every one of my story deadlines. So, when I have a break I like to replace the stresses of school with a few good books. This break was no different and, while I enjoyed them all (especially the life-changing Revolutionary Road, which is Gatsby meets Mad Men, and required reading for you and all your friends), there was one that truly amazed me.

It is said that each generation has a defining moment. For some generations, there are many such moments. For our generation, Jan. 20, 2009, is the first historic moment. Whether you are a die-hard Republican in Boca cursing the “Arab-liberal”, or an impassioned student wearing your Obama pins and “Yes We Can” t-shirts, where we stood on Obama’s historic inauguration will be etched in our minds as a moment none of us will be able to forget. For one, you didn’t really have much choice but to watch — even Law & Order wasn’t airing during Obama’s ceremony. Second, the Obama administration marks a shift in our country, our culture and our society for what I believe to be the better. And not because he’s a black man either, but because he is a man that will mold the next era of what is to become of American Nationalism.

After a daylong trip — 17 hours on the plane, two hours on the road, five hours in the airport — I’m finally standing in front the house where I lived last semester. The three-week holiday at home was sweet and unforgettable, especially after being away for a long while at school.
